Healthy eating doesn't just occur in the cafeteria. It also occurs with the snacks that students receive throughout the school day. This could mean snacks served in before and after school programs, Snack Carts at the high school, A la Carte options, or in class snacks. When healthy snacks are provided to students, the school is providing the opportunity for the nutritional energy the students need for better behavior, better focus and concentration, and reinforcement of the nutrition education taught in classes. These then all lead to longer term goals of better performance academically, development of healthy eating habits, improved health and well-being, and decreased risk of future chronic diseases like obesity, heart disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure.
